We went back to the Cyaman Islands last week for Spring Break. This was the first time we've ever visited either of the "sister islands." We got on a little plane and flew 30 minutes to Cayman Brac- the locals call it the Brac. It's basically an island built on a rocky cliff. It was sad to visit b/c they'd just had a horrible hurricane in November and there was so much damage! It was an eye opener for our kids... they'd never seen any real devastation like that. Many homes were just abandoned. We saw extension cords running all over the place so people could borrow elecrticity from their neighbors. The only hotel on the island was demolished by the storm so tourism was non-existant. We knew that the island had suffered a lot of damage so we'd just planned to spend one day there. We flew over in the morning and flew back to Grand Cayman that evening. The highlight of that trip was #1 an authentic Caribbean lunch and #2 walking the cemetary. There are people buried there from the late 1800s and the family names we saw are the same families that still live in the islands. All-in-all it was an educational day and I think next time we go, we'll visit Little Cayman- which is even smaller than the Brac.
